Beat Back To School Stress
Hello everyone and welcome back to my blog.
This is going to be a long post so grab something to eat and drink but i hope it helps!
In today's post I am going to be talking you through some steps I have learnt from my years of being in school. If like me you suffer with anxiety or have high stress levels in and around school I hope some of my tips can help you and make being in school a little easier.
So, for many of us we are still in the education system, whether that is going into a new year in a school you were already in or moving up to a new one, or even going to college to study a course you have chosen (This is what I am now doing) All of these come with stress and anxiety but we can change this and from years and years of going through summer to having to go to school again i have picked up on some little tips and tricks that make it just that little bit...better.
I am going to go through the school day with the different ways to keep those stress levels at ease.
Part 1 (Morning before school)
Tip 1: Make sure you have an early night. Going to sleep earlier makes stress levels not so bad as you will wake up feeling refreshed and fully awake, ready for that day and it puts you in a better mood as I am sure all of you would agree.
Tip 2: Wake up early. Rushing around trying to find your left shoe in the morning with only 5 minutes until school starts with a 15 minute walk ahead of you really doesn't put you in a very good mood to start your day does it?
Tip 3: If you wear makeup, leave time to get that eye liner on point. If you feel that you look good, it will make you feel much more confident in yourself. A little pampering doesn't hurt and it will certainly help.
Tip 4: Make a playlist with very upbeat and happy songs. Or if heavy metal is more your thing then have a little jump about to that! Listening to music can change our moods very easily so if you are feeling a bit down on one morning listening to upbeat, happy songs or just ones that make you feel good can help get you in a happy mood for school.
Tip 5: Think of something nice you can do after school. This can be your aim to get through that day.
Whether it being able to play a game on your laptop, go to dance class, play football with your friends or to sit and just do nothing. It can be something to look forward too.
Part 2 (During school)
Through school you come into different situations so i cannot give tips for all of them but any I have come up with I am going to tell you about but if you have a different situation I will try to help.
Tip 1: If you find yourself getting stressed in a lesson and your anxiety or stress has nothing to do with what you are actually learning (example: you think people are staring at you) Concentrate on the work. Really get into it because after all, if they are looking at you who is going to do better on those tests? Quite often if you are feeling self-conscious you may be thinking that people are looking but really they aren't.
Tip 2: If you find yourself alone at break or lunch time it can be difficult with what to do. My school had a room people could go to if they found themselves alone at these times. Bring a book with you to school. If you do find yourself in this situation you can always go into the library or if like me there was a room to go to you can go and read in there. Don't worry though. It isn't the end of the world if this does happen to you. Try asking some of your friends to meet you outside a class for lunch or break as some schools can be huge and you can easily loos your friends at break and lunch.
Tip 3: You find yourself getting anxious or stressed from class work in a classroom. I used to find my biology classes really difficult as I cannot stand blood or any medical talk or looking at lets say photos that contain medical cases and often in biology this happens. If you find yourself in this situation or one like it then here's what I did. I asked the teacher if I could step outside and go to the bathroom for a few minutes to calm down. One of the best things to do is often when you get anxious or stressed you will get extremely hot and this does not help one bit. Run your wrists under the cold tap until you have completely cooled down. I don't know why this helps but its a little thing my dad told me to do :) If you continue to have these problems every lesson you may need to organise with your teachers that you maybe have the work sent home or do it somewhere else in school. But this would depend on the situation as everyone is different.
Tip 4: If things all seem to be getting a bit much and your feeling like this day will never end, in your head think of splitting up your school day. Do not think "I have a massive 6 hour day ahead of me still and its only tutor time" This makes you feel defeated and like you cannot cope for that amount but you can. My school day went. 2 hours, break, 2 hours, lunch and one hour. Don't think of it like this though, break up the day so if your going into period 1 think "Ok this is only one hour and then I can go and do something different" After that when its period 2 think "Its only an hour, after this I can have a break" It may seem silly at first but it can help.
Tip 5: Think about the thing you said you could look forward to at the end of the day in the morning.
Part 3: (After school)
Tip 1: Your school day has ended. Do not come home and immediately do homework. You may have already had a stressful enough day and you need to give your mind and body a rest. Do whatever you want for a good hour and then concentrate on any home work you need to do. Obviously different circumstances may come up but that's my overall tip for that one :)
Tip 2: Once all your homework is done it is time to do something you like, yes the thing you said you would do in the morning and worked through the school day to do.
Tip 3: after doing the thing you where going to do in Tip 2 it is probably about time you pampered yourself. Take your makeup off, get your spot creams and face masks because it is time to pamper yourself!
Tip 4: Run a bath, get in and have a soak, put a bath bomb in or don't...whatever you like.
Tip 5: After having dinner get settled into bed with a book or your phone to watch some youtube. Be strict with yourself though and make sure you don't stay up too late as this as I said in part 1, makes everything a lot more difficult.
Now onto the final part which is my tips for dealing with going to back to school!
Tip 1: Try to make the good things about it over ride the bad. Don't concentrate on any of the bad things that you think about when school is mentioned. Be excited to go and see your friends or if its a new school, to meet new people. Imagine the possibilities that could happen and the things you will enjoy.
Tip 2: Everyone mentions it but get new funky note books and pens and pencils. My favourite part of going back to school is getting cute new stationery because lets admit it. Everyone secretly loves having new stationery and if you have to have it why not get the cutest designs for your pen or the coolest pencil case with hidden pockets. Why not?! :D
Tip 3: Get your sleeping pattern under control 2 weeks before school starts. Over summer we find ourselves staying up later and later. Later than we were when it was the school term. So our sleeping patters change from e.g going to bed at 10pm and waking up at 7am to something more like 12am and waking up at 10am. These of course do not work for your school times so 2 weeks before your due to go back to school gradually start going to bed earlier and waking up earlier. By the time school starts you will be back under control with the pattern of your sleep. Trying to change it on the night before school will be really difficult as your mind and body wont be tired enough to get to sleep and you will of course have to get up earlier no matter what so you wont get the hours sleep that you need.
Those are all my tips for going back to school and dealing with stress and anxiety. If any of my advice helps just a few people then 2 hours it took to plan and write it would of been worth it because i totally understand what you are going through if you suffer from these.
All of these tips mentioned are from my own personal experiances. I am not a trained proffesional but am a friend here to help :)
I will all see you in my next post, byeee
